Ethiopia Govt has asked the United State to stop spreading what it considered falsehood against the Country.

Ethiopia’s government has asked the United States to stop spreading what it considers falsehoods against the country, the state minister of communication Kebede Dessisa said Thursday after the State Department issued an alert about potential terrorist attacks.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and rebellious forces from the Tigray region in the north have been fighting for more than a year, in a conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions in Africa’s second-most populous nation.

This week, the Irish government said Ethiopia had expelled four of six Irish diplomats from the country because of Ireland’s stance on the conflict. Spokespeople for the Ethiopian government also have warned against unnamed external threats and repeatedly criticized Western governments for what they say is inaccurate coverage of the war.

Kebede, the state minister of communication, was quoted by state broadcaster EBC as telling a news conference the U.S. government should refrain from disseminating “shameful fake news and defamation regarding Ethiopia.”

He referred to a statement Wednesday on Twitter by the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa that urged its citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance due to “the ongoing possibility of terrorist attacks in Ethiopia.”

Earlier this month, tens of thousands of Ethiopians lied in the capital to support the government, where they denounced the United States for alleged interference in Ethiopia’s internal affairs. Washington has urged its citizens to leave Ethiopia immediately while the security situation still permits.

On Thursday, dozens of protesters took their anger to the U.S. Embassy in the city, where they displayed banners reading “Interference is Undemocratic” and “Truth Wins.

Asked for comment, a U.S. Embassy official said the safety of U.S. citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the State Department, adding: “We continue to urge U.S. citizens in Ethiopia to depart now using commercially available flight options.”

Tigrayan forces and their allies have threatened to march on the capital Addis Ababa. They also have been fighting fiercely to try to cut a transport corridor linking landlocked Ethiopia with the region’s main port Djibouti.

On Tuesday, U.S. Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman warned of an “alarming” increase in military operations and said both Abiy and the Tigrayan forces seem to believe they are on the cusp of military victory.

Nigeria Airforce may be deployed to join battle Boko Haram along Kaduna- Abuja road.

Nigerian security operatives engaging in fire shootouts with the bandits along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. The security operatives thought the gunshots were from their colleagues before realizing it was that of the bandits.

In situations like this, the troop alone may not be able to handle it because they are exchanging bullets horizontally which will prevent any of them from coming closer to each other to avoid being hit by any of the bullets.

Also, bandits may release some of the abducted people and ask them to go towards the Nigerian security operatives and without the knowledge of Nigerian security operatives which may cause those abducted to be hit with a stray bullet.

It will therefore be good if the government can let the air force join them in the fight against bandits. They will be able to bring them on their knees faster than when only the army and security are facing them on ground

Another benefit is that the air force will be able to monitor the movement of these bandits from up and be able to give information to the troops, they will know which area to follow and where to avoid. They will know if the bandits want to use those they have abducted as a shield and device a better means that will prevent casualties on the side of the abducted.

The Nigeria authority should remember the statement of The Secretary to the Niger State Government , Mallam Ibrahim Matane who says the armed bandits are more equipped and mobile than official security agents, with enough weapons and modern communication equipment making the situation very difficult to address.

Though I may not agree that they are more equipped than our security operatives, the statement should make the government become more strict and send Nigerian Air Force to join hands with the troops for a possible quick victory.

The green-eyed Afghan woman immortalised decades ago on a National Geographic cover, has been evacuated to Italy,

Afghan citizen Sharbat Gula has arrived in Rome, it said in a statement, without giving a specific date.

Rome said it had responded to pleas from non-profit organisations working in Afghanistan to help her leave the Taliban-controlled country, “organising for her to travel to Italy as part of the wider evacuation programme in place for Afghan citizens and the government’s plan for their reception and integration.

Gula became arguably Afghanistan’s most famous refugee after US photographer Steve McCurry captured her portrait in a Pakistan camp in the 1980s and it was published on the front cover of the National Geographic magazine.

Gula said she first arrived in Pakistan an orphan, some four or five years after the Soviet invasion of 1979, one of millions of Afghans who have sought refuge over the border since.

She was deported back to Afghanistan in 2016 after she was arrested for living in Pakistan on fraudulent identity papers.

In early September, Rome said it had evacuated almost 5,000 Afghans from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power in August.

Italy earlier this month said it had granted citizenship to Afghanistan’s first woman chief prosecutor, Maria Bashir, after she had landed in the European country on September 9.

Italy was one of five countries most involved with NATO’s US-led mission in Afghanistan along with Germany, Britain and Turkey.

Nigeria: prominent Nigerians have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure the country.

In less than two years to the general elections, prominent Nigerians have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure the country into federating units before he leaves office in 2023.

Restructuring is a political topic that has been generating a lot of controversies in recent times as divergent opinions are being expressed over its reality and possibility.

Apart from individuals, some political parties and social-cultural organizations across Nigeria are not left behind in lending their voices on the need to restructure the country.

They argue that the current federal arrangement is not optimally and sustainably working. They further submit that the perceptions of exclusion, marginalization, and exploitation are so deep-seated that they nurture and deepen divisions, polarisation, and irrational agitations by extremist groups.

These challenges keep persisting because the unitary system of governance the country practices can’t work for its vast diversity!

On the other hand, some people kick against the idea saying restructuring can’t effectively solve the country’s myriad of challenges.

This school of thought argues that strengthening the arms of democracy should be a priority rather than going into smaller components that could further complicate the polity!

This article takes a look at the prominent Nigerians who insisted on having Nigeria restructured before the 2023 general election. Also, the reasons given to back up their claims are equally examined:

On Wednesday, the immediate past National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, joined fellow Nigerians to advocate a short-term restructuring before the next general election.

He said having it would address myriads of challenges confronting the country. He added that restructuring the polity is not difficult but both the executive and National Assembly that are posed to make it a reality are not serious.

The University don regrettably argued that members of the National Assembly have failed to recognize the desirability of doing the needful in repositioning the country.

Leader of Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo last week Thursday urged President Buhari to restructure the country before the presidential elections come 2023. He threatened that Afenifere will mobile its members and the people of the South-west to press home the demand.

The 93-year old octogenarian lamented that despite initial agreement to restructure Nigeria before Buhari came into power in 2015, the ex-military leader has refused to heed the call of the people on devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, and state police.

The former president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has stated that the failure to restructure Nigeria is a threat to the 2023 general elections. He disclosed this while speaking at the 14th Anthony Cardinal Okogie Foundation (ACOF) annual lecture.

Nwodo insisted that failure to devolve power into federating units might lead to massive disruption and boycotting of the 2023 polls.

He argued that many regions within the country are not satisfied with the current status of things in the country, feel marginalized, and would prefer a change of how things currently stand.

In August this year, the Northern elder and Permanent Secretary in the defunct North Central State wrote the federal, state governments, the leaders of Senate, and House of Representatives to work towards the restructuring of the country before the 2023 elections.

He strongly recommended a parliamentary system where the present six geo-political zones would be converted to regions, each with a premier, regional House of Assembly, where there would be a prime minister with a deputy.

Nigeria: Following the ban of Okada in Niger State 10,000 riders leaves Niger state.

Niger State Government has allegedly forced over 10,000 commercial Okada operators to flee the state, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane has confirmed.

Matane who stated this in Minna said with the ban placed on the operations of Okada riders earlier and recently on the sale of motorcycles, the state has started witnessing some relative peace.

He explained that the ban on the sale of commercial motorcycles was taken to control the activities of bandits who mostly use the motorcycles for their operations.

When we imposed the ban, the bandits were almost closing in on Minna, the state. And, we got an intelligence report that over 300 motorcycles were sold in two days and that’s a very rare sale. When we asked, we were told buyers were coming from other states to buy motorcycles in Minna. That was why we had to place a ban on the sales of motorcycles. With the ban, over 10,000 Okada operators left Niger State and that was when we started noticing some peace around the state. This is because 99% of the activities of bandits are carried out on motorcycles and these same motorcycles are used as ramsons or Jerry cans of fuel among others, the state govt image-maker disclosed.

He said those still defying the ban on the movement of motorcycles are Okada riders that came from other states such as Kebbi, Kaduna because they feel it has been strongly enforced in Niger State.

He also revealed that apart from the killing and kidnapping of people, bandits in some communities in the state are also taxing farmers on their farm produce before they could harvest them and refusal will lead to setting farms on fire.

We have always thought that the National Government should have a coordinated response that is sustainable with all the level severity, but we have some other challenges in doing that.

You see Nigeria today, every state is on its own. You pursue your own agenda for you to survive. If support comes fine, if it doesn’t you are on your own. The citizens will deal with you directly, they dont care whether there is a federal government or not. The citizens know their governor, they know the apparatus of the state and they take their issues there to be addressed

Matane further explained that before the ban, the state government met with motorcycles dealers in the state, where it was agreed that they should register any customer that purchases more than one motorcycle.

The dealers, according to him, were also supposed to liaise with the state Ministry for Transport and Board of Internal Revenue to ensure that the motorcycles are coded.

The SSG decried the failure of the dealers to honour the decision reached between them that resulted in the sales of over 300 motorcycles without notifying the relevant authority.

However, Matane expressed optimism that the ban would go a long way to assist in curtailing the operations of bandits in the state, adding,” it’s our prayer that in one or two years time, this whole problem would go away, that’s my prayer every day.
