Urgent action to reform global trade rules is crucial.

Climate agreements reached in Glasgow this month could come under legal attack from polluting multinationals unless the UK takes urgent action to reform global trade rules, ministers have been warned.

A coalition of environmental campaign groups, development charities and unions are urging the government to use its clout as president of the Cop26 climate change summit to drive through change at next week’s crucial World Trade Organisation meeting.

The UK must use its “unique opportunity” to take bold action to align world trade rules with the internationally-agreed imperative to keep global warming beneath 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, the group said.

In a letter to Cop26 president Alok Sharma and international trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan, seen by The Independent, they called on the UK to put pressure on the WTO to agree a “climate waiver” which would prohibit countries from using the global body to challenge one another’s climate policies.

Rules should be changed to ensure they do not “slow down, constrict, raise the cost of or otherwise interfere with climate action”, the letter said.

RecommendedIn addition to WTO rules, bilateral treaties can deter countries from introducing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions because of fear of costly arbitration of cases brought by companies which lose out from the change.

The letter highlighted the case of the Netherlands being sued by energy company RWE over efforts to phase out coal-fired power stations.

And it warned that the UK could face similar action from investors with a stake in around £120bn worth of fossil fuel infrastructure. The EU has previously been challenged at the WTO on competition ground by China over its renewable energy schemes.

And Indonesia and Malaysia recently launched a challenge to EU policy on limiting the proportion of palm oil seen as a major cause of deforestation in biofuels.

Malaysia a leading voice in the CPTPP Pacific trade partnership which Britain is seeking to join – has said that the UK would have to revise its approach to palm oil to get a trade deal.

Meanwhile, a possible ministerial statement on trade and the environment expected to be agreed at the WTO’s MC12 summit in Geneva is thought unlikely to commit members to any binding action. And a UK-backed fossil fuel subsidy statement appears to be limited to an agreement on “capacity-building and exchange of information and experience”.

And WTO rules can hamper the transfer of climate change technology to developing countries while fostering increases in unsustainable production and deforestation.

International trade rules are standing in the way of action on climate change, warned the letter, signed by 12 groups including the Trade Justice Movement, Friends of the Earth, Traidcraft, Global Justice Now and Unison.

Whilst making some important steps in the right direction, the climate conference did not live up to expectations. Extreme weather events are already devastating communities around the world, and the risk of catastrophic climate change is growing. We must use all the tools available to stand the best chance of averting this.

Calling on Ms Trevelyan and Mr Sharma publicly to confirm the UK’s commitment to ensuring trade will be aligned with climate goals, the letter said: “Your government has a unique opportunity to take bold action on trade policy.” Trade Justice Movement senior adviser Ruth Bergan told The Independent: The problem with the environment initiatives at the WTO is that most of them are not binding, and currently appear to be mostly talks about setting up talks about cooperation and information exchange.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has maintained that elite capture of Pakistan’s resources and absence of the rule of law.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has maintained that elite capture of Pakistan’s resources and absence of the rule of law had not only deprived the majority of the people of basic amenities but also kept the country from achieving its immense potential.

The problem was the elite capture of resources which deprived the majority of proper healthcare, education and justice. Lack of rule of law is the reason why Pakistan had not achieved its potential, the prime minister said in an exclusive online conversation with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf aired on Sunday.

An American Islamic scholar, Hamza Yusuf, is the president of Zaytuna College and had also authored several encyclopedia entries, academic papers, and articles on Muslim bioethics, legal theory, abortion, and many other topics.

The prime minister said no society could ever achieve its potential if there was no rule of law.

“Merit is also associated with rule of law. If you do not have meritocracy in a society, you have this elite, which is spoiled, rich and which did not strive and struggle and they sit on the main position. Countries disintegrate because of a decadent elite. People do not decay it is the elite that decays,” he remarked.

The prime minister said the fundamental principle of a civilised society was the rule of law where powerful is also equally answerable to the law.

The biggest problem in the developing countries was the absence of rule of law and discriminatory laws for rich and the poor, he explained.

He told the interviewer that he wanted to make Pakistan an Islamic welfare state based on the concept of state of Madinah by our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“We want to base this country on two principles. One it should be a welfare and humane state which takes care of its bottom strata of society and second rule of law,” he remarked.

Talking about climate crisis, he said the environment should be treated as sacred. The biggest environmental disaster in the world called climate change was because human beings had deviated from basic principle of protecting the earth.

Quoting a Hadith of Holy Prophet (PBUH), advising the humans to “Work for this world as if you will live forever and work for the hereafter as if you will die tomorrow,” the prime minister said whatever the humans would do today would ultimately have an impact on the future generations.

He said the Hadith had completely encompassed everything about environment and how one should be living on earth. He said one would have to pursue a humane life if he or she wanted to get close to the Allah Almighty.

Imran said the leadership that came up through the political system was just too divorced from faith so they came in for power and compromised for staying in power and gain personal benefits.

I find every few politicians coming with the specific objectives of looking after humanity. In most of the developing world they come in power for self-interest and for making money.

Unfortunately there were very few “Mandelas” who came in for a noble cause. Our great leader Jinnah who was founder of Pakistan, was someone who came for a great cause, Imran noted.

He viewed that the politicians were looked down upon because they say they claimed to help the people but contrarily, they helped themselves, he added.

The prime minister said he came into politics because of his faith. “I had everything. I was already a big name in the country as a sports star and I had enough money. So, for me struggling for 22 years to become the prime minister made no sense. The only reason was I believed that I had a responsibility towards society because I was given more than others,” he added.

He said according to all religions, the human being would be tested based on the benefits and privileges given in life. “I came into politics because I had faith and realised that I was so blessed, so had the responsibility towards society.

Germany / Australia confirm its first Omicron covid-19 variant.

Health officials in Germany’ Munich and Australia’s state Sydney have confirmed on Sunday that two arrivals (both the countries) from southern Africa over the weekend had tested positive for the Omicron coronavirus variant.

The New South Wales health department said both passengers had come to Sydney on Saturday evening and had tested positive for COVID-19 late that night.

Meanwhile, Germany’s first two cases of the Omicron variant have been confirmed in Munich, German news agency (dpa) quoted the Bavarian health minister as saying on Saturday.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified Omicron, first detected in South Africa in November, as a variant of concern.

The two travellers found to be carrying the strain in Germany had entered the country by plane from South Africa on 24th November, Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek said.

According to the Australian health officials they had detected the Covid Omicron strain in Australia for the first time in two passengers who were tested after flying into Sydney from southern Africa.

The Eastern state of New South Wales’ health authority said it had conducted urgent genomic testing and confirmed the new strain was present in the two people who landed in Sydney on Saturday.

Both passengers came from southern Africa and arrived in Australia on a Qatar Airways flight via Doha, NSW Health said in a statement.

They tested positive for Covid shortly after arriving, leading to an urgent analysis for possible infection by the heavily mutated Omicron strain.

The two positive cases, who were asymptomatic, are in isolation in the special health accommodation. Both people are fully vaccinated, NSW Health said.

Another 12 passengers from southern Africa on the same flight did not test positive for Covid but had been placed in quarantine, it said.

About 260 passengers and crew on the plane have also been told to isolate, the health authority said.

The plane with the infected passengers landed on the same day that Australia announced it was banning flights from nine southern African countries including South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The World Health Organization has listed Omicron as a variant of concern and said it could take several weeks to know if there are significant changes in transmissibility, severity or implications for Covid vaccines, tests and treatments.

Czech Republic electric new PM amidst Omicron Covid-19 variant.

Mr. Petr Fiala was named the Czech Republic’s new prime minister on Sunday in an unusual ceremony, with wheelchair-bound President Milos Zeman speaking from behind a plastic barrier because he has Covid-19.

Mr. Fiala, a 57-year-old literature fanatic and former amateur footballer, is a James Bond fan who entered politics after becoming the country’s first political science professor following the fall of communism

He started out in politics as a science adviser to the prime minister in 2011 and then a year later became education minister.

He only became a lawmaker following a general election in October 2013.

The bespectacled, bearded man who carefully guards his privacy is on the biggest mission of his life after leading the centre-right Together alliance to a narrow election win in October.

I am James Bond in fact, he once went so far as to say in an interview.

Bond can shoot well and so can I. He also speaks many languages and is well-educated, and I hope I fulfil that too, Fiala said.

Mr. Fiala, a bearded, bespectacled former political scientist, will face the urgent task of grappling with one of the world’s highest Covid infection rates including a case of the new Omicron variant.

I am convinced we will soon have a strong and stable government, Fiala said at the ceremony.

The five parties have agreed on the composition of the future government and on a policy statement.

Post-election talks were held without the 77-year-old president, who was taken to hospital by ambulance on October 10, a day after the election, to be treated for liver problems.

No cause for alarm as U.S CDC said no Omicron Covid-19 variant have been detected in US.

The United State Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday night that no cases of the Omicron Covid-19 variant have been identified in the U.S. to date.

In a statement, the agency wrote that it was following the details of the new B.1.1.529 variant, which was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by South Africa and classified as a variant of concern by the organization on Friday.

We are grateful to the South African government and its scientists who have openly communicated with the global scientific community and continue to share information  about this variant  with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and CDC.,” the CDC said.

We are working with other U.S. and global public health and industry partners to learn more about this variant, as we continue to monitor its path, it wrote.

The CDC noted that it is continuously monitoring variants and that the U.S. variant surveillance system has reliably detected new variants in the U.S.

We expect omicron to be identified quickly, if it emerges in the U.S. the agency added.

The agency said travelers to the U.S. should continue to follow the CDC’s recommendations for traveling and that people should continue to follow COVID-19 prevention strategies, like wearing a well-fitting mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high community transmission, physically distancing, washing their hands frequently and getting vaccinated against the disease.

The CDC said it would provide updates as more information becomes available.

News of the variant sent health officials across the world scrambling to react on Friday, with several countries including the U.S. implementing travel restrictions despite WHO guidance and pleas from the African Centers for disease Control and prevention, which said that such travel bans have not yielded a meaningful outcome.

Cases of the variant have been reported in Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong. Germany also has a probable case.

Dutch authorities are checking for the omicron variant after 61 passengers on two flights from South Africa tested positive for COVID-19.

U.K. Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed Saturday that two people in Britain had tested positive for the variant and that the cases were linked and related to travel from southern Africa.

One was in the southeastern English town of Brentwood and the other was in the central city of Nottingham. The two cases are self-isolating alongside their households while contract tracing and targeted testing takes place.

It seems to spread rapidly, President Biden  said Friday, telling reporters that he’s decided that we’re going to be cautious.

The White House said that the U.S. will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other countries in the region beginning on Monday, with exceptions for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and for several other categories.

The Omicron variant which has a high number of mutations alarmed health professionals due to its swift spread among young people in South Africa, although there was no immediate indication whether the variant causes more severe disease.

Early evidence suggests omicron carries an increased risk of infection compared with other highly transmissible variants according to the (WHO).

U.S. and South African scientists were meeting Friday to discuss their findings, though it is not yet known whether omicron can evade immune response.

A number of pharmaceutical industry, including AstraZeneca, Moderna, Novavax and Pfizer, said they have plans in place to adapt their vaccine in light of the emergence of omicron.

As it was reported by Bloomberg on November 11, the USA has warned its European partners about a  possible Russian military operation against Ukraine. According to the agency, Washington’s assessments are based on information that the American side has not yet shared with the EU. Officials familiar with the White House say this information is backed up by publicly available evidence.

The satellite photos taken by Western experts on November 2 confirmed reports that Russia is again concentrating troops and military hardware on the border with Ukraine. The images were taken by Colorado-based US space technology company Maxar Technologies, which handed them over to Politico.
