The NBA has urged the Delta State Government clear herdsmen out of the Court premises.

The Warri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has urged the Delta State Government to engage and synergize with the security forces to clear herdsmen who have taken over farm lands and homes of Deltans in the communities along the Ohoror-Bomadi Road.

While decrying the security situation along the Eku-Abraka Road, the lawyers also told the state government to ensure that the ravaging herdsmen were also cleared from that route.

They held that the road was no longer safe for travellers.

NBA in a statement by its branch chairman and Secretary, Chief Oghenero Okoro and S.G. Ediagbonuvie, respectively, lamented over the bad and deplorable state of the Effurun Roundabout, Effurun, is not only worrisome but embarrassing. It has continued to cause great pain, suffering and loss of revenue to the residents of Warri, Effurun and environs due to the grid lock it occasions daily.

It is also a bad testament to and an advertisement of the twin cities of Warri and Effurun, considering the fact that the Effurun roundabout is the gateway into the cities of Effurun and Warri for visitors and investors transiting through Warri, Effurun and environs to other parts of the country.

That the Warri- Benin Road, a Federal high way, particularly the Effurun to Oghara portion of it, has been totally taken over by miscreants and other non-state actors who in the guise of one taskforce or the other have mounted road blocks on every metre of the road.

Some Government agencies like the NSCDC (National Civil Security and Defence Corps) and Delta State revenue task forces, rather than check these miscreants, have also joined them in inflicting grueling pain on commuters on this road.

Between the Effurun Roundabout in Effurun and Oghara Junction in Ethiope-West Local Government Area, about 32 (Thirty Two) of these illegal road blocks are mounted by these non-state actors.

This is excluding the ones mounted by men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

These road blocks do not only make commuting on the Effurun to Oghara portion of the Warri-Benin Highway difficult but also cause damage to vehicles of commuters and the road itself.

There have also been reports of robberies and attacks on citizens at night by criminals taking advantage of the logs and barricades left on the road at these road blocks.

That the security state of the Eku-Abraka Road and also the Ohoror-Bomadi Road is now very alarming.

Fulani herdsmen have reportedly taken over the entire stretch of the Eku-Abraka Road, daily kidnapping, killing, raping and maiming our people.

This also is the scenario on the Ohoror-Bomadi Road stretch where farmers have been forced to flee their farms and their homes and same have been taken over by these Fulani herdsmen and other bandits/criminals.

Consequently, the NBA, Warri Branch hereby demands the following; That the Delta State government, as a matter of urgency, should take steps to immediately rehabilitate and fix the Effurun Roundabout and restore it to normalcy.

The government should also take advantage of the repair to beautify the roundabout which has been taken over by some mentally challenged persons, due to its long neglect.

In addition to fixing the roundabout, the Delta State Government should also think of creating alternative routes in the area to divert traffic from the Roundabout and reduce the pressure on it.

This will reduce the rate of failure of the Roundabout which has become yearly.
(b) The State Government should also as a matter of urgency liase with the Police, army and other security outfits in the country to clear the Effurun to Oghara portion of the Warri-Benin Road of all the road blocks mounted on the road by the non- state actors masquerading as one taskforce or the other.

It is instructive to note that apart from the menace these roadblocks cause to commuters, it has also become great security risk to travellers as criminals stay at these road blocks to rob and kidnap or maim travellers in the night when these miscreants who mounted the road blocks have gone home.

That the State should engage and synergize immediately with the security forces to safeguard the lives and property of persons travelling along the Eku-Abraka Road by clearing out the herdsmen who have taken over these area.

This also goes for the herdsmen who have also taken over farm lands and homes of Deltans in the communities along the Ohoror-Bomadi Road.

The Branch also wishes to use this opportunity to commend the State Government for the recent rehabilitation of the Jakpa and Airport Road Junction on the Effurun Sapele Road. It is hoped that these rehabilitations will be extended to other parts of the cities.

We tracked down the vehicle believed to be involved in a recent murder of a Muslim man in Albuquerque. The driver was detained and he is our primary suspect for the murders. We will update the media later this afternoon.

Three Muslim men from the same mosque aged between 25 and 41 were fatally shot in the area during the past month.

A fourth Muslim man was also killed last November in a case that police believe may be linked to the recent shootings.

On Sunday, local police released a photo of a car that they described as a vehicle of interest in the shootings of 4 Muslim men, soliciting information from the public about it. Local law enforcement had set a $20,000 reward for information leading to the shooter.

Muslim-American organisations and activists had been calling for employing federal and local resources to apprehend the attacker, with the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) urging the White House last week to take a direct role in responding to this shooting spree.

On Sunday, US President Biden said he was angered and saddened by the horrific killings, stressing that his administration “stands strongly with the Muslim community.

Vice President Kamala Harris also denounced the killings.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham had called the shootings wholly intolerable, promising to do everything possible to support the Muslim community in the state.

I am sending additional State Police officers to Albuquerque to work in close coordination with APD and the FBI to bring the killer or killers to justice and they WILL be found, she wrote on Twitter last Saturday.

China; New virus called Langya henipavirus have been discovered in China Henan province.

A new type of animal-derived Henipavirus (also named Langya henipavirus, LayV) that can infect humans has been found in East China’s Shandong Province and Central China’s Henan Province, and has so far infected 35 people in the two provinces, according to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) by scientists from China and Singapore.

The new type of Henipavirus was found in throat swab samples from febrile patients in eastern China with a history of contact with animals in recent times, according to media reports.

Scholars who participated in the study pointed out that this newly discovered Henipavirus, which may have come from animals, is associated with some febrile cases, and the infected people have symptoms including fever, fatigue, cough, anorexia, myalgia, and nausea.

Further investigation found that 26 out of 35 cases of Langya henipavirus infection in Shandong and Henan provinces have developed clinical symptoms such as fever, irritability, cough, anorexia, myalgia, nausea, headache and vomiting.

Henipavirus is one of the important emerging causes of zoonosis in the Asia-Pacific region, Shanghai-based media reported, noting that both Hendra virus (HeV) and Nipah virus (NiV) from this genus are known to infect humans with fruit bats as the natural host of both viruses.

Henipavirus can cause severe disease in animals and humans and are classified as biosafety Level 4 viruses with case fatality rates between 40-75 percent, according to the data from World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting that this is much higher than the fatality rate of the coronavirus.

However, there is currently no vaccine or treatment for Henipavirus and the only treatment is supportive care to manage complications.

The cases of Langya henipavirus so far have not been fatal or very serious, so there is no need for panic, said Wang Linfa, a Professor in the Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Medical School who was involved in the study, adding that it is still a cause for alert as many viruses that exist in nature have unpredictable results when they infect humans.

No significant spatial or temporal clustering of Langya henipavirus has been found till now, meaning that human-to-human transmission of the virus has not been proven, although previous reports suggest that the virus can be transmitted from person to person.

Coronavirus will not be the last infectious disease to cause a pandemic worldwide, as new infectious diseases will have an increasingly greater impact on human daily life, Wang Xinyu, Deputy Chief Physician at the department of Infectious Diseases of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, said.

It is important to stress that the scope of this type of disease should not be limited to human diseases, but should be looked at in a larger context, Wang said, noting that the concept of one health proposed by several international organizations in recent years is a suggestion and method that aiming to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems.
